CMS Bookmarks: Melanie Stankiewicz

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools' district-wide commitment to literacy includes demonstrating literacy as well as teaching it. CMS Bookmarks is a weekly feature that looks at what our employees are reading. This week's reader is Melanie Stankiewicz, a kindergarten teacher at Huntersville Elementary. She's been with CMS for 11 years.

Stankiewicz was born and raised in West Palm Beach, Fla. She graduated from Florida State University with a degree in early childhood education. She received her National Board Certification in 2005 and renewed her certification in 2015.

She has five children ranging in age from 14 to 25. She has been married to her husband for 22 years. She enjoys reading, traveling and photography.

What are you reading now?
I am currently reading The Girl on the Train. I am not very far into the story yet, but it is already catching my attention. I love a good mystery. I read the book before I see the movie because the book gives deeper explanations than a movie. The characters are more developed and you gain insight into the underlying emotions and details in the plot. I can't wait to finish so I can see the movie.

What is your favorite book of all time?
One of my favorite books of all time is Farenheit 451. It is a well-written and thought- provoking story about a fireman whose job is to set fire to books. It requires the reader to check their moral compass and inner feelings on progress and knowledge and how easily our rights could be taken away.

What's your favorite place to read?
I read anywhere and everywhere. Whenever I get a spare minute, I am reading on my phone using the Kindle app. I also like to read at home in my favorite chair. I can even be caught reading during commercials when my favorite show is on.

Where do you get your books?
I generally purchase books for my Kindle through Amazon. Occasionally, I purchase an actual hard copy of a book just so I can feel the pages.
