CMS announces four new principals and an executive staff appointment

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education approved four new principals at its June 4 meeting. An executive staff appointment was also announced.

Beth Thompson was named the assistant superintendent of academics. She has been the principal at Whitewater Middle since 2014. Thompson was principal at Whitewater Academy from 2010 to 2014. She was also dean of students from 2008 to 2010, an academic facilitator from 2006 to 2008 and a teacher from 1996 to 2006 at Alexander Graham Middle. Thompson has a bachelor's degree in classical studies from Davidson College in Davidson and a master's degree in educational leadership from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C.

Chuck Fortuna was named principal at Davidson Elementary. He has been the principal at Highland Renaissance Academy since 2017. Fortuna was also principal at Elon Park Elementary from 2011 to 2017, held the positions of assistant principal from 2010 to 2011, interim principal in 2011 and dean of students from 2009 to 20010 at Thomasboro Academy, academic facilitator from 2007 to 2009 and teacher from 2006 to 2007 at J.V. Washam Elementary and teacher at Blythe Elementary from 2005 to 2006. He has a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y., and a master's degree in education, curriculum and instruction from the University of Phoenix (Arizona).

Bobby French was named principal at Pineville Elementary. He has been the assistant principal at Lake Wylie Elementary since 2017. He was also interim assistant principal at Pineville Elementary in 2018, interim principal at Lake Wylie Elementary from 2017 to 2018, assistant principal at Olympic Community of Schools from 2015 to 2017 and Ardrey Kell High from 2013 to 2015. French was a dean of students at Smithfield Elementary from 2011 to 2013, academic facilitator at Garinger High in 2011 and a teacher at E.E. Waddell High from 2008 to 2011. He has a bachelor's degree in English from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, N.C., and a master's degree in educational leadership from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C.

Christy McCauley was named principal at Hawk Ridge Elementary. She has been the assistant principal at Hawk Ridge Elementary since 2018. McCauley was an assistant principal at Steele Creek Elementary from 2012 to 2018, dean of students at Oaklawn Language Academy from 2011 to 2012, magnet coordinator from 2010 to 2011 and teacher from 2003 to 2010 at Idlewild Elementary. She has a bachelor's degree in early childhood education from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio, and a master's degree in education, curriculum and instruction from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Jessica Savage was named principal at Whitewater Middle. She has been the assistant principal at North Mecklenburg High since 2018. Savage was an assistant principal from 2015 to 2018 and dean of students from 2014 to 2015 at William A. Hough High, a Title 1 secondary math specialist in CMS in 2014 and a teacher at West Charlotte High from 2012 to 2014, Hawthorne High from 2011 to 2012 and Midwood High from 2007 to 2011. She has a bachelor's degree in elementary education from the University of Michigan – Dearborn in Dearborn, Mich., a master's degree in science from Walden University in Minneapolis, and a master's degree in school administration from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C.
