CMS closed on Feb. 1 due to inclement weather

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will be closed on Monday, Feb. 1, for all students due to inclement weather conditions from this past weekend. It will be a Code A: Optional Teacher Workday for all employees. Staff spent the afternoon checking road conditions and while many roads are clear, several secondary roads are still icy and not safe for travel.

"Safety of our students and staff is our number one priority," said Dr. Peter C. Gorman, superintendent of CMS. "Because this is such a large county, sometimes there are weather issues in some parts and none in other areas."

All after-school activities (Community Use of Facilities activities, tutorials, Parent University courses, PTA meetings, and athletic events and contests) will be canceled. The CMS After School Enrichment Program will not be in operation Feb. 1. CMS new-employee orientation and all professional development activities are also canceled. The mid-year graduations that were scheduled for Feb. 1 at Bojangles Coliseum have been rescheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 2, at 5 and 6:30 p.m.

CMS employees are encouraged to use good judgment in making the decision to report to work. If travel conditions are not safe, employees should exercise the options available in a CODE A: Optional Teacher Workday:

  • All 11- and 12-month employees will report to work, use annual leave, use personal leave (classroom teachers) or take the day without pay. Eleven and 12-month employees do not have a make-up option.

  • Ten-month employees (i.e., teachers, teacher assistants, 10-month secretaries, etc.) can choose one of the following five options:

1.      Report to work.

2.      Use annual leave.

3.      Use personal leave (classroom teachers).

4.      Take the day without pay.

5.      Make up the day during a time approved by the principal/supervisor.

  • Nine-month employees with available annual leave may take an annual leave day. All other nine-month employees will take the day without pay.

Superintendent Dr. Peter C. Gorman will recommend to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education that the make-up day will be scheduled for Monday, Feb. 15, which is a teacher workday.
