Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools added nearly 2,000 students in the 2010-2011 school year, district officials said. The 20th-day enrollment count shows that there were 135,638 students in kindergarten through grade 12, an increase of 1,974 students over the 2009-2010 count at the same mark.
The district also reported a pre-kindergarten enrollment of 3,169. Combined, the district has 138,807 students pre-kindergarten through grade 12 in the 20th-day count.
“Although enrollment growth has slowed, CMS is still continuing to grow each year,” said Scott McCully, executive director of student placement, which compiles the enrollment data. “We anticipated growing this year, but not quite this much. Our total K-12 enrollment is 687 students more than we projected during the summer.”
The district counts students each month that school is in session. Enrollment fluctuates slightly during the year. The 20th-day count, along with a count taken on the 40th day, is used by local and state officials to calculate allotments of state funding and other resources. CMS generally uses the 20th-day count as the official enrollment figure for the year.
The count also includes demographic information about CMS. The 20th-day count also shows that 41 percent (55,801) of CMS students in kindergarten through grade 12 are African-American, 33 percent (44,487) are white and 16 percent (22,221) are Hispanic. About five percent of the K-12 enrollment is Asian/Pacific Islander, four percent is multi-racial and less than one percent is American Indian.
