Ms. Laurie Slack thought her principal Ernest Saxton was visiting her class for an observation on May 8, instead he came to her announce that she was the Terrific Teacher Tuesday winner for May. Saxton and a few guests from V101.9 surprised Slack with gifts and a certificate to celebrate her success in teaching.
“This is a great honor and I am proud,” Slack said. “I love teaching and watching the children grow and get excited about learning.”
Slack has been teaching for 15 years. She has been recognized for making her classroom a fun, learning environment for students. Slack was nominated for the award by McAlpine parents.
“She’s the best teacher in the whole wide world,” said Ryann McHaffie.
“She teaches us fun stuff,” Taylor Dalrymple said.
The Terrific Teacher Tuesday contest is sponsored by V101.9 FM and local businesses, to recognize teachers who go above and beyond in the classroom.
Slack received the following prizes as this month’s winner: edible arrangement bouquet, a $45 gift card to Outback Steakhouse and a digital camera. She also received an iPad, courtesy of State Farm.
The students in her class received pizza from Papa John’s, a prize pack from State Farm and coupon for a complimentary kid’s meal at Outback Steakhouse.
The Terrific Teacher Tuesday winner is selected each month from an online contest held on the radio stations’ Web site. The teacher who collects the most votes each month is selected the winner. At the end of the school year, each monthly winner will also compete for a grand prize and a car.
