River Oaks Academy was recently selected to participate in the Scholastic Book Fair and Target sponsored Scholastic Read and Rise Family Reading Night.

Earlier this month, the events kicked off with Target donating more than 600 reading certificates for each student at River Oaks. Students used the certificates to purchase books from the book fair.

"Target and Scholastic provided our scholars easy access to a wide variety of books," said literacy facilitator Jennie Green-Morehead. "Scholars had a chance to select books that were of interest to them."

Students excitedly asked, “Wow! We get $5 to buy a book?"

During the Read and Rise Family Reading Night, parents were invited to attend a Family Literacy Workshop to equip them with additional tools to help make reading a habit at home and to inspire a lifelong love of reading.

Families also participated in a build-a-book activity, and volunteers from the local Target store held read-alouds with students. 

"The Read and Rise Family Reading Night involved the entire family and helped to make reading a family affair," Green-Morehead exclaimed.

The evening was a huge success.
