Kylie McKinney, an autism teacher at Winget Park Elementary is the Terrific Teacher Tuesday winner for December. Mary Hughes, a fifth-grade teacher at Military and Global Leadership Academy at Marie G. Davis, was named the contest winner for November.
Both teachers were recognized during a surprise celebration with school administrators and staff from WBAV Radio and State Farm.
The Terrific Teacher Tuesday winner is selected through an online process managed by WBAV. One monthly winner will receive a brand new car at the end of the school year, courtesy of King Suzuki of Hickory.
Hughes has been a teacher for 11 years. She taught at Albemarle Road Elementary from 2001-2006 and J.H. Gunn Elementary from 2006-2011. She also served in the United States Navy for 14 years.
“What I love most about teaching is to see struggling students become successful,” said Hughes. “It gives me great pleasure to see them a year or two later and to hear that they are still doing well.”
McKinney has been teaching for eight years and has been at Winget Park since the school opened in 2006. She also taught in Fayetteville, NC.
“My students are fun to work with,” McKinney said. “It’s fun to see the lights go on and each day is different.”
Hughes and McKinney received a $400 gift card, courtesy of State Farm, and a $50 gift card from Tempo. They also received a cookie bouquet from Cookies by Design.
The Terrific Teacher Tuesday contest is sponsored by V101.9 FM and local businesses. The contest recognizes teachers who go above and beyond in the classroom.
