The Board of Education adopted the Student Assignment Goals on February 23, 2016, with the intention of later approving guiding principles to facilitate its work in developing a new student assignment plan. The superintendent presented draft guiding principles to the Board on April 12. At the request of the Board, the Board's Policy Committee then reviewed the draft at its regular meeting on April 14 and recommended several minor edits, which are available at http://www.cms.k12.nc.us/boe/Pages/Policy-Committee.aspx.
The Board heard from numerous parents, teachers and other members of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community during a public hearing on April 20.
The Board will consider adopting the final draft, "Guiding Principles for Student Assignment," on April 26. It incorporates the edits recommended by the Policy Committee as well as other feedback received from Board members since April 12. This document is the culmination of more than 12 months of work by the Board as part of its comprehensive review of the student assignment plan. The Board intends to include the adopted guiding principles in amendments to Policy JCA, "Student Assignment Plan," which the Board will consider in the coming months.
