Prevention and Intervention Services is one of the departments included under the Department of Student, Family and Community Services. The Prevention and Intervention Services Team provides, develops and monitors programs to promote healthy development, support students who may have barriers to effective school performance, and reduce the dropout rate. The Prevention and Intervention Services Team supports and provides professional development for the School Psychologists, Student Service Specialists, School Social Workers, and Dropout Prevention personnel. One program offered by Prevention and Intervention Services is the Best Friends Program, a youth development program for girls in grades 6-12. Prevention and Intervention Services provide student and family support services to the Bright Beginnings Program through social work and psychology services. Three CMS-DSS Educational Liaison's coordinate communication and services between the Department of Social Services and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to better support student success. School-based therapeutic services through Behavioral Health and the Family Center are also coordinated through the Prevention and Intervention Services Department. The Dropout Prevention Technician monitors student driver's license eligibility and reports the eligibility results to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The school-based staff members conduct psycho-educational and/or social history assessments, provide counseling, and are proactive in using preventive measures to assist teachers and parents in developing interventions and strategies to meet the needs of students. Prevention and Intervention Services has developed dropout prevention programs such as the Truancy Mediation Program, the Truancy Court Program, the Student Support Case Management Program, Tolerate No Truancy Program and the Morningside Alternative Program for 9th and 10th graders who have dropped out or are on the verge of dropping out of school.
