Magnet Themes
World Languages

The unique opportunity to become fluent in Chinese, French, German, Japanese, or Spanish is offered to students participating in the elementary language immersion program.  From the first days in Kindergarten, students become familiar with the new language as lessons are conducted in the second language for all or part of the instructional day.  Elementary students enter the immersion language program at grades K or 1 because research indicates that it is easier to learn a second language at an early age.  In order for children to gain the greatest academic benefit, they should begin in Kindergarten and continue through high school.

In grades 6-12, students continue the study of their second language and may have the opportunity to begin the study of a third world language.

Collinswood Language Academy (K-8)
A Dual-Language Spanish/English program is offered at Collinswood Language Academy.  Academic instruction is provided in both languages by elementary certified Spanish speaking and English speaking teachers. English speaking students and Spanish speaking students study grade level content together and serve as language models for one another. Both groups of students are immersed in a new language while developing literary skills in their native language. The goal of this challenging academic program is for students to become bilingual (listeners and speakers) and biliterate (readers and writers). Parents are encouraged to visit a classroom and attend an Open House prior to selecting this magnet program.

Oaklawn Language Academy (K-8)
Oaklawn Language Academy offers foreign language immersion in Spanish for K-5 students. The language program at Oaklawn is modeled after the successful elementary language immersion programs at E.E.Waddell Academy and Collinswood Language Academy. Academic instruction is provided in Spanish by elementary certified Spanish speaking and English speaking teachers. At the middle school level, students continue to study their immersion language or begin an accelerated course of study in a new language. Parents are encouraged to visit a classroom and attend an Open House prior to selecting this magnet program.

E.E. Waddell (formerly Smith) Language Academy (K-8)
Waddell Academy provides a unique opportunity for students to develop and to learn in an international environment. The Academy offers full language immersion programs for K-5 students in German, French or Japanese and dual language immersion in Chinese for K-1. At the middle school level, students continue to study their immersion language or begin an accelerated course of study in French, German, Japanese or Spanish. In order to be successful, new middle school students must have a strong interest in foreign language study.

South Mecklenburg Academy of International Languages (9-12) and West Mecklenburg Academy of International Languages (9-12)

Magnet program students are required to take seven (7) elective courses in their target language during grades 9-12. Elementary students seeking entry into the Language Immersion magnet after kindergarten (Chinese, Japanese) or grade 1 (French, German, Spanish) must schedule a late entry immersion assessment with the school to determine if the student meets grade level target language proficiency.

Students entering the World Languages magnet at grades 6-10 must score level III or IV on Reading proficiency, based on the Reading EOG or English 1 EOC test taken in the school year prior to attending.  Students who retest must meet level III or IV on the first retest.  Students seeking to enter Oaklawn Academy at grade 8 must have successfully completed Spanish 1.

In addition to the Reading/English proficiency requirement, students entering grade 9 must have successfully completed the first level of a world language prior to attending, or, must be willing to successfully complete level one and level two during ninth grade.  Students entering grade 10 must have completed level two of a world language.  Students entering in grades 11 and 12 must apply through the Reassignment/Transfer request and a transcript analysis must be completed by the prospective school.
