What is the Academic Internship Program?
The Academic Internship Program (AIP) is a program that provides opportunities for high school students to have hands-on experiences in areas of academic or career interest prior to college or post secondary training. The AIP has been in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools for over 30 years, placing nearly 600 students in internships each year. |

What is the Process?
An intern in the program usually spends two afternoons per week after school at the internship site on days that they and the community sponsor arrange and must have reliable transportation to and from the site. Rising juniors and seniors may complete an internship during the summer, offering greater scheduling flexibility. 34 hours is the minimum time required to receive credit. Occasionally a student will continue to the 68-hour, 102-hour or 135-hour level, earning additional credit or will complete more than one internship before they graduate. Up to one unit of internship credit may be counted as a general elective credit toward graduation. The grade and credit become part of the student’s permanent high school transcript but does not affect GPA or class rank. A handbook guides the student intern through the requirements. Each student sets goals, keeps a journal and time sheet, completes a capstone activity and reflection of the internship. These activities and the sponsor’s evaluation are used to determine the final grade. Points are deducted for not meeting deadlines. |

What are the benefits?
Participating in an internship demonstrates initiative. Internships help students obtain a more realistic view of a career area, make better decisions concerning post-secondary education, gain experience and make contacts that may help them when applying for college programs or scholarships.
