Safe & Drug Free Schools
Intent of Grant
This is a formula grant given to school districts to provide supplemental assistance to ensure safe, disciplined, and drug-free learning environments for all students and staff. Funds may be used for research-based programs and activities proven to be effective in preventing or reducing risk factors contributing to adolescent drug use and violence.
Who We Are
The Student Assistance Program (SAP) acts as the equivalent of an Employee Assistance Program only for students. The team is comprised of 10 Counselors, a Coordinator, a secretary, a Financial Secretary and a Lead Teacher at a CMS school embedded within a drug treatment center.
What We Do
This program is responsible for:
- Operating the Positive Options Program (POP) for students found in violation of drug policies and their families; the goal is to reduce further student use by strengthening the family
- Facilitating contracted substance abuse services, including the Mecklenburg County Youth Drug Survey (YDS)
- Coordinating and collaborating with community agencies to facilitate referrals for services
- Providing individual and group counseling for violence and substance abuse issues
