Dear Mecklenburg County Private/Home School Director:

The Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) has a duty under federal legislation entitled the Individuals with Disabilities Improvement Act (IDEIA) to seek out and evaluate students suspected of having educational disabilities and provide appropriate service.  Accordingly, CMS held a meeting on January 30, 2012, to discuss the referral process and the provision of appropriate services.

CMS in consultation with and after soliciting suggestion from private and home school directors made the decision to serve students with Speech-Language as a primary disability during the 2012-2013 school year. Speech-Language therapy services will be provided in the students’ school settings by contracted and licensed providers to facilitate easy access to services.  The decision was incorporated into the CMS federal funding project that was submitted and approved by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
