Home School/Private School Notification of Services

May 15, 2017

Dear Mecklenburg County Private/Home School Director:

The Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) has a duty under federal legislation entitled the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) to seek out and evaluate students suspected of having educational disabilities and provide appropriate services.  Accordingly, CMS held a meeting on January 31, 2017, to discuss the referral process and the provision of appropriate services.

CMS, in consultation with and after soliciting suggestions from private and home school directors, made the decision to continue serving students with Speech-Language as a primary disability during the 2017-2018 school year.  Speech-Language therapy services will be provided in the students’ school settings by contracted and licensed providers to facilitate easy access to services.  Services will include regular consultation to each student’s general education teacher.  Services will continue until the current year’s proportionate share of funds has been exhausted.  In addition, the EC Program will purchase a variety of research-based educational materials with any remaining funds that private and home schools can request as needed to support students with disabilities in their programs.

The decision was incorporated into the CMS federal funding project that was submitted and approved by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
