Oakhurst teacher celebrates second Terrific Teacher win

Winning Terrific Teacher Tuesday is no doubt on honor, but to win the award twice in less than two years is pretty amazing.

Oakhurst Elementary third-grade teacher Elizabeth Rogers did just that.

“I’m pretty overwhelmed by the fact that I won again,” She said. “Oakhurst is a great school and anyone of us is deserving of it.”

The contest, sponsored by WBAV 101.9 FM and local businesses, recognizes teachers who go above and beyond in the classroom.

“Our teacher is terrific because she is nice and says there is never a numb question,” said student Asata Fatoyinbo.

“And she’ll help you if you get stuck on a question,” said student Gracie Brandt.

Rogers, who has taught at Oakhurst for the past five years and 10 years overall in CMS, first won the Terrific Teacher honor inElizabeth receives laptop courtesy of State Farm's Jessica Shoemaker March 2008.

“Ms. Rogers is a dedicated teacher who is a true advocate for all students,” said Principal Susan Wilson. “The parents feel that she communicates the academic progress of their children consistently and she has a true love for the children.”

Rogers received the following prizes as this month’s winner: cookie bouquet from Cookies By Design, computer provided by State Farm, digital camera provided by Tempo Entertainment Venue and a $45 gift card to Outback Steakhouse. Her students also received the following prizes: pizza from Papa John’s, drinks from Coca-Cola, gift bag with school supplies from State Farm and a coupon for a complimentary kid's meal at Outback Steakhouse.

The winner is selected each month from an online contest held on the radio station’s Web site. The teacher who collects the most votes each month is selected the winner. Each monthly winner will also get to compete for a grand prize at the end of the school year. More information can be found at www.v1019.com.
