Asher Fazal acts and achieves at Hough
Asher Fazal entered William Amos Hough High as a shy freshman who never imagined himself onstage, but he is finishing high school as both senior class president and an actor.

Asher credits his involvement in the school’s theater program with helping him grow into the young adult he is now. He has participated in nine productions and said he gets so much joy out of acting.

“Theater has definitely been a place where I've come out of my shell over the past four years,” said Asher. “Theater is definitely my home here.”

Asher said he tried to be more outgoing, but it was the support of fellow students that helped him come into his own. He was energized when he was around other people, and he eventually developed leadership skills that led to his first elected office, class secretary.

Theater teacher Katherine McDougall helped show Asher true leadership qualities, he said. “I'm able to be right next to her a lot of times, and just watching the way she leads and teaches has been incredibly inspiring,” Asher said. “She's able to be so calm and so interactive with her students.”

Asher is also involved in other school activities, and high school counselor Colleen Grosse said he’s an “all-star” student. “He is involved in theater, the arts, dance, musicals,” she said. “Additionally, he has been pivotal in establishing the Huskies Against Hate group that instills values of inclusivity, acceptance and peer leadership, and he’s academically at the top of his class.”

Asher plans to attend Appalachian State University and major in sociology. “I might go to law school afterward,” he said. “It depends on what really interests me.”
