CMS dominates State Science Olympiad

On Saturday, April 28, 45 Division B (middle school) and 43 Division C (high school) teams from schools across the state participated in the North Carolina Science Olympiad State Tournament at NC State University. Piedmont IB Middle took top honors in the Division B category, scoring 204 points. Second place went to Jay M. Robinson Middle (216 points) and fourth place went to J.M. Alexander Middle School (254 points).

Division C teams from CMS also placed well at the state competition. Ardrey Kell High placed seventh (285 points), Myers Park High placed eighth (343 points), Providence High placed 12th (396 points), East Mecklenburg High placed 13th (400 points) and North Mecklenburg High placed 18th (471 points).

As first and second place winners, Piedmont IB and Jay M. Robinson will move on to the Science Olympiad National Tournament at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, May 18-19. Both Piedmont and Robinson have participated in the national competition before and are ready to put that experience to work.

Piedmont IB Principal Dee Gardner is proud of her students and their coach, Melanie Bell, seventh-grade science teacher at Piedmont IB.

“This Science Olympiad team is absolutely amazing. Students collaborate to acquire knowledge, they research and process information for understanding, and then they apply, solve-problems, design, create and innovate on the science-based topics—it’s truly a 21st Century challenge.”

CMS Science Specialist Wayne Fisher can’t recall a CMS Division B performance that outmatched this year’s results.

“I believe the excellent performance by our middle school teams at the state level is strong evidence for the way teachers and schools have taken ownership to excite students about STEM in our schools. We congratulate the teachers, parents and students who have worked so hard all year to prepare for the regional and state tournaments.”

Gardner says her team is focused on their upcoming competition.

“This team is ready for Orlando. We are proud of them and we wish them well.”
