Omar Cruz, a senior at Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology, is known for his work as a mechanic. “I feel great knowing that my parents, friends and family are proud of me, knowing that I am doing good things and better things for my future,” Omar said.
The 17-year-old has worked for five months in the Mecklenburg Automotive & Collision Center. “His journey has been phenomenal due to him starting Central Piedmont Community College’s career technical certification in brakes, alignment and pre-apprenticeship while in his senior year at CMS,” said Deepal Patel, Phillip O. Berry’s Career and Technical Education career development coordinator. “His future plans to pursue an associate’s degree at CPCC for a career in automotive are promising.
“As a first-generation Latino student, the decisions he made and route he took have made him outstanding because of that and who he is,” said Patel.
“My parents are from Oaxaca, Mexico; I was born in Atlanta, Ga.; and raised here in Charlotte, N.C.,” said Omar. “My whole life I've been with CMS, and CMS has done great things for me.”
Omar plans to graduate in June.
“I am going to be the first one in my family to go to college; my parents unfortunately didn’t finish school and my brothers didn’t finish,” said Omar, who plans to have his own mechanical workshop.
