Senior story: Demarcus Kilgo, West Charlotte High

Demarcus is an enterprising person who sees obstacles as opportunities, and he never loses sight of the end goal. Despite the loss of his mother this year due to COVID-19, Demarcus continued to pursue his goal to graduate high school and attend college. He is ranked third in his class at West Charlotte High and is in the honor society. He also received certifications in Adobe InDesign, a layout and page design software, and Python, which is a programing language system.

This fall, he will attend N.C. Agricultural and Technical State University, where he will major in engineering. His drive and determination are evident in all that he does. After graduation, Demarcus plans to work during the summer and save money for college.

Ten years from now, Demarcus plans to have a successful career that aligns with his education in engineering or electrical, earning him a good salary.

Demarcus has had many people in his life who have molded him into the young man he is today. The three people who have made the biggest impact are his father, aunt and grandmother. He credits them for being his support system, especially during difficult times. "They are constantly uplifting and pushing me. They are my supportive backbone. They helped me see all the good surrounding me."

The highlight of his school year was making friends and being on the cross-country and track teams. A positive environment helped him maintain focus. "This year has been stressful for a lot of different reasons, and I'm happy I have the stride built in me to push through all the pain and confusion I've experienced."
