Senior story: Owen Howard, East Mecklenburg High

When asked to describe his senior year at East Mecklenburg High, Owen Howard chose some very wise words given the year these students have had: "One Big Scramble."

Owen is an automotive gearhead. He restored a 1997 Mazda Miata that had fallen into disrepair. Much of his time at East Meck was in automotive classes. His biggest highlight was when the Automotive 2 class finally got the electrical system for a car all hooked up and working. They had spent nearly a month working on the system.

After graduation, while studying automotive systems and technology at Central Piedmont Community College, he plans to continue working at Scott Clark Toyota. This will build his experience in the automotive industry to help him get the opportunity to work in the racing industry.

There have been several people who have influenced Owen.

"In terms of school, I've had a few teachers over the years, like Ms. Castle, Mr. Ruffin, and Mr. Edwards (who was never actually my teacher) help guide me in the right direction on both a personal level and an educational one. I'd also give credit to some of my friends a couple years older than me, who were able to give me advice whenever I needed it through their own experiences."

"I will always remember the moments where I truly learned something, when something really stuck in my head either because I was having so much fun learning it, or a teacher recognized a mistake I made and made sure to help me correct it."
