The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Board of Education has adopted policies that represent their official position on student assignment. Several policies were revised as a result of the 2017-18 Student Assignment Review. Policies relevant to Student Assignment include:
Student Assignment Policy JCA (effective 11-9-16): This policy outlines the goals and guiding principles for Student Assignment as well as the Student Assignment Plan which includes school attendance areas, determination of student residence, the school options lottery, assignment rules, lottery deadlines, partial magnet schools, contingent assignments, notice of assignment, communications, and comprehensive reviews. The implementation details are described in regulations approved by the Superintendent. They include:

Student Assignment Policy JCA-E (effective 11-9-16): This policy describes the purpose of the school options lottery; lottery guarantees and priorities; as well as the lottery process.
Student Assignment Policy, JCA-E2, (approved 5-9-17): This policy describes the criteria used to create school boundaries.
