The IB Primary Years Program (PYP) is an inquiry-based curriculum in which students learn through transdisciplinary units of study during grades kindergarten through 5.  Each school establishes a Program of Inquiry which incorporates six transdisciplinary themes:  who we are, where we are in place and time, how we express ourselves, how the world works, how we organize ourselves, and sharing the planet.  The school's Program of Inquiry ensures appropriate development of each theme across each grade level, with state and local curriculum requirements embedded in each unit of inquiry.  Study of the arts, a second language, and physical education are also integral parts of the PYP.

At the heart of every IB program is the Learner Profile, a list of ten attributes which describes IB learners.  According to the Learner Profile, an IB learner is knowledgeable, a thinker, a communicator, reflective, a risk-taker, principled, open-minded, caring, an inquirer, and balanced.

The IB illustrates the PYP curriculum using the diagram below:

At the end of the PYP--typically in grade 5--all PYP students complete a project which allows them to synthesize their learning from their years in the PYP.  These projects are displayed as part of a school-wide Exhibition.
