March 19, 2020
Dear CMS families of students with disabilities,
I know that many of you have questions about COVID-19 and how it relates to CMS educating students with disabilities. You and your children may also be experiencing added stress and anxiety. We are with you during this very difficult time. Please utilize NC 2-1-1 if you need any support. You will continue to receive district-wide communication from CMS, however I wanted to share a few notes specifically about students with disabilities.
Beginning March 23, CMS will be providing supplemental (optional) learning opportunities for ALL students in CMS, including students with disabilities. Your student with a disability will have access to the General Education and Special Education opportunities through their teacher. This will not be new content or material. Because the district is currently closed for all students, special education services and related services are not currently being provided.
In the event that CMS shifts to virtual instruction for all students after March 27, virtual special education services will be available for students with disabilities to the greatest extent possible. The use of virtual platforms can and will be considered on a case-by-case basis for the delivery of special education and related services. If virtual special education services are not appropriate for a student, compensatory education plans will be developed.
As we learn more information from federal, state, and local authorities, we will do our best to continue to update you. The best place to find information is on the EC page of the CMS website, which is linked here. We will post daily updates.
As you know, this is an unprecedented time and the information and guidance that we have from federal and state authorities remains fluid. As we receive additional information and guidance, we will be in touch to update you.
If you have questions, please reach out to your child’s teacher. If you have additional questions, please reach out to Elaine Jones, EC Parent Liaison, at 980-343-9423.
Sincerely,Dr. Ann WhiteAssistant Superintendent, Programs for Exceptional Children
