Gov. Pat McCrory has signed his first bill into law and it’s an education-related bill. Senate Bill 14 requires that, starting with the 2014-2015 school year, every high school diploma include one of three designations: college-ready, career-ready or college- and career-ready. These designations must reflect courses completed, overall GPA and other criteria as established by the State Board of Education. This legislation also emphasizes vocational education, instructing the state board to identify areas with teacher shortages around the state, particularly those in the area of career and technical education (CTE) and high needs-schools, and coordinate placement of NC Teacher Corps members to fill those vacancies.
